The last full public audit of Fort Knox gold occurred in 1953. Ada obtains a leaked copy of a 1974 internal Treasury review commissioned by Secretary William Simon — never released. It does not question whether the gold is present. It questions whether it was ever present in the documented quantity. Simon annotated two discrepancies in his own hand: reconcile before burial. Ada finds the analyst who drafted the document. He did not write those words. Someone else was in it after him.
